Hey, why are you looking at me? I want wisdom as much as you do, mate, but "I still haven't found what I'm looking for" :-)

Intelligence -- the natural ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills -- is a wonderful gift. Who doesn't wish he had more of it? It can't be bought or acquired, but it can, sadly, be despised and neglected. Are you using it? Push your intelligence to it's limits. Don't be satisfied with mediocre efforts. Don't lose yourself in bewailing what you lack of it, but make the best of what you have. Intelligence is a wonderful gift -- but only if you use it!

Knowledge, on the other hand, is not a gift. It is something you must actively seek, and for which you must be willing to pay. No knowledge is free. To acquire knowledge you must be wiling to invest time (and maybe other resources) -- but the results will certainly be rewarding. You can never have too much of it (although it will, sometimes, put terrible burdens on your shoulders). With knowledge comes responsibility to yourself and your neighbours. But knowledge also brings freedom (even to those who are in chains!). Knowledge is a wonderful prize -- so go for it!

"And yet I show unto you a more excellent way" -- the way of wisdom. Lord Chesterfield said: "In seeking wisdom thou art wise; in imagining that thou hast attained it -- thou art a fool." Oh, how vast is the number of intelligent and knowledgeable fools around us. Intelligence seems to have soared to new heights; knowledge, in this on-line age, is rapidly becoming ubiquitous; but where is wisdom? King Solomon wrote: "For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it ... How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! ... Wisdom is better than strength ... Wisdom is better than weapons of war."

"Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom" (Proverbs 4:7).

Twenty year ago Mensa said I'm intelligent. My education indicates I'm more or less knowledgeable. People closest to me know I'm not wise :-)

Wisdom comes when your knowledge is used with intelligence.

I actually sat on Space Mountain for an hour thinking about this topic. What is the difference between intelligence and wisdom. I still hope to write a series of articles on it someday, but in the end I believe intelligence is a strength in information and wisdom is a strength in concepts.

People with higher intelligence are usually very strong in specific areas, math, science, history. People with higher wisdom are good at connecting concepts between things they have limited knowledge on. I consider myself more a wise person because I don't retain specific information very well, yet I have always been the guy people go to for advice. I am able to help people with things I've never actually done myself.

Cheers Paddy and thanks for reminding me about this subject.

Jon, I would also suggest that their is an element of time in wisdom which is absent from intelligence. If you're wise, you'll be wiser tomorrow than you were today -- whereas intelligence can lead to more knowledge, but not more intelligence (see Oldfogey's comment above).

Also, at the risk of sounding stupid, I suggest that wisdom is less rational than intelligence, yet is more desirable (IMO). Sometimes it's wiser to admit you don't know all the answers.

Thanks for your input, Jon.

Thanks for a good topic, Paddy.

I think of it as "Intelligence is knowing how to do things, Wisdom is knowing what to do."

Both wisdom and knowledge come over time and experience. No one enters grade school knowing what will soon be taught, nor can they relate knowledge to experience, etc. But intelligence is an inate capacity of understanding. Without intelligence, more effort and time must be spent toward gaining knowledge, which further decreases potential wisdom.

As I see it, anyone can be wise and/or have knowledge, but intelligence is rather rare.

Maybe it's just that I'm watching Zoolander at the moment.....

Plenty. Those of us with the intelligence to do so have no excuse for not seeking knowledge and wisdom.

This wonderful article is just an example of why I don't want you to leave us, Paddy. Your wisdom and your heartfelt contributions will be sorely missed.

Here are a few of my favorite quotes:

"It is impossible to underrate human intelligence - beginning with one's own."
Henry B. Adams

"No man likes to have his intelligence or good faith questioned, especially if he has doubts about it himself."
Henry B. Adams

"In view of the fact that God limited the intelligence of man, it seems unfair that He did not also limit his stupidity."
Konrad Adenauer

and;

"Evolution made civilization steward of this planet. A hundred thousand years later, the steward stood before evolution not helper but destroyer, not healer but parasite. So evolution withdrew its gift, passed civilization by, rescued the planet from intelligence and handed it to love."
Richard Bach

I would take the word "evolution" and insert "God" in its place. Just my take on it ....
